Finally, my year long project will be shown this Thursday!!! I'm super excited to watch it with all my friends, classmates, professors, coworkers and family-- it's the most exciting time in my 4 years at Pratt! It's almost unbelievable how fast time went by from when I decided to be an animation major during freshman year to me now being in the senior thesis show. It was a great 4 years in college and now it's time to move on to my next step in life. I'll miss you Pratt Institute. Here I come, real world. :)

Yes, it's an old piece, but I realized I've never put it on my blog! This was for my junior year final for Mike Enright's animation class. It was based off a mini comic I did for independent publishing class (which basically served as my storyboards). Thank you Chase and Melissa for being my voice actors!!!

So I've been hiding in a hole and working nonstop on my senior thesis animation the past few months. The deadline is near (April 12!!) so it's getting a little more stressful. I am so excited to see all of our hard work come to fruition. Our senior year has a variety of awesome animations from experimental to hand drawn to documentary, I can't even describe them all!!

If you haven't heard, our senior show will be played at the Anthology Film Archives May 5th, Wednesday night (7:30pm??) as well as at Memorial Hall at Pratt Institute April 29th (6-9PM) with the Digital Arts department.

Good luck to those who're treading through the last few weeks before the deadline.

Singin' in the Rain

During my film class last semester I watched Singin' in the Rain for the first time. It was AMAZING. It really changed my perspective on the 50s and even the late 20s - early 30s (where the film takes place). I guess I never knew how awesome film was in the past.

I decided to take a shot at rotoscoping and used Singin' in the Rain as the footage:

This scene was incredibly beautiful and surreal--completely took me by surprise. The entire film had a really energetic musical feel, but had this strange entrance of a lengthy side story. I found it very mysterious and loved it.

Aside from that, nowadays rarely do you see in theaters well done acting, dancing, and singing all at once.

I wanted to try out a new style, as you can see it's very different from my previous comic in HATCH vol II. I really do enjoy manga and I don't think I'll ever lose that influence. It's an art form that I appreciate a lot, more than just as a comic, but as a childhood memory that is associated with it.

The anthology that this comic is going to be in (Static Fish) will be printed by 2010!! Being editor for this comic was really rewarding and working with a different team this time made the experience very interesting for me. I'm super excited to put this issue out in stores once it's printed!!

Last week I went to the Ottawa International Animation Festival for the first time. It was really great, I saw a ton of films and met some amazing animators! I was most inspired by Peter Sohn, who directed Partly Cloudy (a short film that was played before Up). He was the funniest speaker, it was almost like watching a stand up comedian with animated visuals and storyboards. He happened to be a first generation Asian-American that had to deal with language barriers with his mother, which was exactly what I had to deal with my entire life. It really reached out to me, especially seeing that he was able to become a director for a Pixar film! (Although it did take him 9 years to get up there.) I am definitely going back next year, and am pumped to work on my own film!!

The past weekend my beloved roommate and I decided to enter a 24 hour animation contest (called Bring Your Own Pixel). It was painful. It was amazing. The theme was "It hurts so good." Thanks a bunch to Chase and Keith for keeping us alive during the 24 hours!!

A photo compilation/transition assignment. One of the best part of traveling in China was the FOOD!! Photos taken by me, winter 2009. Music from PUMP IT UP (Beethoven - Vivaldi Winter). The foods were from various parts of China, including Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Hong Kong.

This week was a total Fuck My Life moment. Long story short, losing your passport and your birth certificate at the same time really sucks. Especially if you don't own a driver's license. Had to take several days off just to fix this problem.

In any case, since I didn't get a chance to do much animating, here's some random and old sketches just to keep up my weekly updates.

I like to draw random cute girls sometimes.
These are possible characters for my senior thesis animation. I've always liked this sketch and the concept that I've thought of for it, but I'll see where it goes.

Some things I've been working on for World Leaders Entertainment. You might want to play it a few times since it's pretty short. (I set them to 30 frames per second). This was animated, inked and colored by me! They provided rough sketches and a model sheet for reference.

These images were directly influenced by apartments in China, especially ones from South East China (places in or near Guangzhou). After visiting the places where my parents originated, I was really inspired by their alleys and buildings. Some of the buildings in China have this sort of theme, where one entire building is coated in a solid color. Chinese people also love to dry things out in the open; laundry, herbs, meat. There's actually some influences from Brooklyn apartments where I live too(it's hard to avoid since I see them everyday). Also, if you notice in the first image, there's a grill on the roof--I was craving for hot dogs and really wanted some barbecued ones so I made one in Maya... I still want a grill and really crave grilled hot dogs!

Hatch Vol II

Yea, it's been a long time since I've posted, but I might as well post about my one very long and extensive side project that I'm proud of--HATCH Volume II (an anthology of several comics by different artists). Official website here.

Finally, the long awaited HATCH Volume II is done! It was another difficult piece to put together (being the one organizing it/editor-in-chief AND making a comic), but it was all worth it. We had a great turnout for this issue, I'm proud of everyone who participated!! THANKS GUYS! T__T
